Kim Jong Un Honors Army Engineers After 120-Day Russia Deployment, State Media Reports

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hailed soldiers of the Korean People’s Army’s 528th Engineer Regiment after their return from a 120-day mission in Russia, state media KCNA reported. Kim praised the unit’s “heroic” conduct and loyalty in carrying out orders from the ruling Workers’ Party.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly praised a military engineering unit following its return from an overseas mission in Russia, underscoring Pyongyang’s emphasis on loyalty, discipline, and fulfillment of party directives, according to state media.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Saturday that Kim attended a formal welcoming ceremony for an army engineering unit that had recently completed its assignment abroad. The unit, identified as the 528th Regiment of Engineers of the Korean People’s Army (KPA), returned home after a 120-day deployment during which it carried out duties in Russia.

During the ceremony, Kim addressed officers and soldiers of the regiment, commending them for what he described as “heroic” conduct and “mass heroism.” KCNA said the leader credited the unit with faithfully executing orders issued by the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, framing their performance as an example of absolute obedience to party leadership and the state.

State media coverage emphasized the political and ideological dimension of the deployment, portraying the mission as a demonstration of the military’s readiness to serve national objectives beyond the country’s borders when directed by the party. While KCNA did not provide operational details about the specific tasks undertaken in Russia, it highlighted the duration of the mission and the leadership’s direct recognition of the soldiers’ efforts upon their return.

The report also reflected the importance North Korea places on ceremonial acknowledgment of military service, particularly for units involved in overseas assignments. Such public praise from Kim Jong Un, as carried by KCNA, serves to reinforce internal messaging about unity between the party, the military, and the state, while elevating the status of those who have carried out sensitive or symbolically significant missions.

The welcoming ceremony and Kim’s remarks signal the leadership’s intent to showcase discipline and commitment within the armed forces, while also drawing attention to the role of the KPA in fulfilling party-driven objectives abroad. As North Korea continues to project strength and cohesion through state media, the event highlights how overseas deployments are leveraged to reinforce domestic narratives of loyalty, sacrifice, and national purpose.
